Madjestic Kasual’s ‘A Mix’ series is considered by geniuses and culture heads to be the “best” music mix series in the world. It’s considered by morons and dunces to be the “worst”. This should speak volumes.
It’s time to do ‘A Mix’, but for interviews. I have asked past ‘A Mix’ contributors to respond to questions. Some have complied. Introducing ‘An Interview’: a new text-centric series featuring only the best artists in the world.
‘An Interview’ Number 3 is Gribs.
Pictured: Gribs
I first saw Gribs in London in 2018, as she presided over a dancefloor like a hairworm to a cricket. I saw Gribs A&Ring people like object blue and Iceboy Violet and aircode into the general public’s consciousness in her past life as co-don of TT. I saw Gribs orchestrating a dope and swag A/V-performance-cum-DJ-set-cum-book-reading at the ICA. I credit Gribs with birthing a not-insignificant chunk of my ever-mushrooming IQ.
She’s led me down thoughtpaths I’d never otherwise have explored. I’m talking gnarly strolls down Missouri Williams Street. I speak of Sangria-drunk Airbnbcore constitutionals along Chad Williams Promenade. I make fawning reference to the one-way ticket to the Freakosphere that is her shadowy, stealthmode-activated NTS show. I have perceived Gribs in many forms and doing so has made me better at being a person. You should do the same.

What are you wearing?
Black hoodie and black jeans???????
You have to wear one brand and one brand only for the rest of your life. What brand + why?
Selkie so I can finally become an enchanted pylon.
Song you’re scared to play out?
AYA [fka LOFT] - Heffalump.
This is a track that I have been saving to play at “that” imagined “sunrise” moment. As time passes I become more afraid that said moment does not exist or that I’ve already missed it.
Song you wish you’d made?
JPEGMAFIA x Freaky - Xanny Davis Jr.
The beat makes me want to throw my laptop out of the window.
Most formative show/set you saw live?
Total Freedom’s opening set at Trance Party 6 in Sheffield. You couldn’t see ANYTHING through the smoke so it was a private gossip session with ghosts/demons/angels/the whole team.
What’s a smell that instantly evokes memories?
The pink Loreal Nutri-gloss hair cream smell combined with Davidoff Cool Water instantly makes me feel like my fake eyelash is falling off.
What was your childhood nickname?
Gribs

What’s your wedding song?
We will sit in silence and think very seriously about what we have done.
What’s your eulogy song?
Nice try.
3 items you want to be buried with for use in the afterlife.
My iTunes library is my most trusted weapon so beyond that I will improvise with whatever I’m handed.
What’s a film/song/miscellaneous media unit that puts real fear in you?
I have always hated the donkey transformations in Pinocchio, especially when they lose the ability to speak. The other version I saw as a child has them all ecstatic just before they realise what’s happening and that it’s irreversible. HATE
Favourite hidden-gem Wikipedia page?
The terminology section on Change Ringing is soothing.
Celebrity crush?
Jeremy Strong. I like people who are obsessed with their work.
This interview series is ultimately about enterprise and career advancement. What is your Myers-Briggs type?

Who’s playing you in your biopic?
I will go full Method and do all my own stunts (Best Supporting Actress)
You can assemble a 4-person supergroup. Who's in the band? What are they playing?
Mark Leckey, JPEGMAFIA, Bianca Scout and Mariah Carey. An opera?
Goated music video?
Leo Hoffsaes & Loto Retina - Red Feelings. Years on this continues to HAUNT me, as does the album. God tier.
An Interview Segment: 5-10-15-20-25-30-35-40-45-50-55-60-65, etc.
P4k The Music That Made You question format but it’s Madjestic Kasual. Music from every fifth year of your life that defined your being at that point.
5: West Side Story/Leonard Bernstein - Dance At The Gym
Musicals, musicals, musicals, musicals.
10: Naoki - B4U
Favourite Dance Dance Revolution song.
15:
15 is memory soup
20:
I have to cheat on this one but unsurprisingly
However you’re feeling/I can make you feel better!
25: Junior XL - It felt like moving forwards, but you’ve been going round in circles
Listen 4/5x in a row walking loops around a park with a fucked up circadian rhythm for the full experience.
